Medical Lab Technician

Medical Laboratory Technicians work in laboratory settings, performing tests and procedures to diagnose and treat medical conditions. Their primary responsibilities include collecting and processing blood samples, performing laboratory tests, and reporting results. Medical Laboratory Technicians typically require an Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology and a current certification. They must also have experience in laboratory settings and be certified in BLS if required by the facility.

General Requirements

To become a medical laboratory technician, you typically need:

  • A postsecondary certificate or associate's degree in medical laboratory technology
  • Completion of a training program approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)
  • Passing the Certified Medical Laboratory Technician (CMLT) or Registered Medical Laboratory Technician (RMLT) exam
  • State-specific certifications or licenses may be required
